The bank declined
an international transfer.
The transfer was returned or is stuck on a compliance review? We'll diagnose the cause and build an alternative route with the same final result for the recipient.
Why a bank returns an international transfer
Most returns have explainable reasons — and each has a working workaround route.
Correspondent bank compliance
An intermediary bank on the route refused to process the payment due to internal policy or tighter rules for a specific jurisdiction.
Source-of-funds check
The recipient's bank requested proof of source and did not receive a complete document package in time.
Sender's or recipient's jurisdiction
A specific country came under enhanced scrutiny. The standard SWIFT channel stopped working in that direction.
Payment reference
The wording of the reference raised questions. The problem is often solved by re-issuing the documentation.
Mismatched details
An error in the IBAN / SWIFT code / recipient address. The bank returns the payment for technical reasons.
Limits and currency control
The sender's one-off or periodic limits are exceeded. The bank requires additional authorisation.
How an alternative route works
If the direct banking path is closed, it doesn't mean the money can't reach the recipient. It means another channel is needed.
- Cause analysis — we study the SWIFT copy and the return message
- Channel selection — correspondent, OTC, conversion via a third jurisdiction
- Documentary preparation — payment reference, contracts, source of funds
- Test payment — for large amounts a preliminary route check is possible
- Execution — with confirmation at every stage
- Backup route — a plan B is prepared for recurring payments
What to do right after a return
The more information in the first message, the faster a working option can be proposed.
Save the documents
The SWIFT copy, the bank's return message, the recipient's details — these are the basis of the analysis.
Record the reason
Ask the bank for the formal reason for the refusal. This saves time on the next step.
Don't repeat the same payment
Repeating the same scheme usually gives the same result. A different route is needed.

How it works in practice
Paying a Turkish equipment supplier
A manufacturing company could not pay a contract to purchase equipment from a supplier in Istanbul. The direct SWIFT was returned by the correspondent bank citing internal policy. MUVEX selected an alternative route through an EU jurisdiction with EUR → TRY conversion. The payment was executed in 3 business days, the recipient confirmed crediting, and the documents were prepared for accounting.
Not every case is solvable.
But most are.
MUVEX works only with legal operations. If a case goes beyond compliance — we'll say so directly. If a solution exists — we'll find it.
